Why not host a school visit? It’s a great opportunity for children to meet and ask the how’s and why’s of creating a picture book. As well as being inspired, budding authors and illustrators get a greater understanding of the process used to create picture books and can apply this knowledge to their work.

To find out more, please go to my profile page at Lateral Learning's website. http://www.laterallearning.com/authors/rycroft.html

Nina's Program
My programs are enjoyed by all (teachers included). I try to keep my presentation fun and interactive - my drawing demonstrations are always a hit with the children. I adjust my talks depending on the age group that I am delivering to, offering a programs that suit preschooler, K-2 as well as a more process driven program for years 3-6.

During a session, I demonstrate the importance of visual story-telling, showing how I work with the words to tell a story. Along with buckets of enthusiasm, I like to bring lots of props; my paints and brushes, sketches, press sheets, and original artwork, are all used to help describe the steps that I use to create pictures for books.

Any artwork created during the session is yours to keep!

I had the pleasure of spending a week as artist in residence with the students at Newington College Preparatory School, Wyvern House celebrating Literature Week March 2009

Thanks so much for all your hard work and enthusiasm...it was such a pleasure to have you with us for a week – so much so that lots of the boys kept peering around the art room and asking if you’d be here again this week!

The process of creating a picture book
Illustrations may simply decorate the text however, in a good picture book the illustrations are absolutely necessary. They carry parts of the story; expanding upon the words and providing information essential to the story. The words and the pictures must share the story, each working in their own way to create a single narrative.
